Teeth Whitening

Professional whitening that actually works — up to 8 shades brighter in a single appointment.

Professional teeth whitening is the single fastest cosmetic upgrade for your smile — and the results of in-office professional whitening are dramatically more powerful than anything you can achieve at home. At Magnolia Family Dentistry, we offer both in-office whitening for immediate results and custom take-home trays for gradual whitening at your own pace.

In-Office Professional Whitening

Our in-office whitening treatment uses a professional-strength hydrogen peroxide gel applied directly to your teeth under careful supervision. The treatment takes approximately 60–90 minutes and can achieve results 6–8 shades whiter in a single appointment. This is the fastest, most dramatic whitening option available — ideal for patients with an event coming up or who want to see results immediately.

Custom Take-Home Whitening Trays

We fabricate custom-fitted trays from impressions of your teeth — far superior to the one-size-fits-all trays in store-bought kits. These custom trays hold the whitening gel precisely against your tooth surfaces without excess contact with gum tissue. You wear the trays 30–60 minutes daily (or overnight with lower-concentration gel) for 1–2 weeks to achieve dramatic results at your own pace. The trays are reusable for years with periodic gel refills.

Why Professional Whitening Beats Store-Bought

  • Professional-strength carbamide peroxide gel (far more effective than OTC formulations)
  • Custom-fitted trays that hold gel against teeth without gum contact
  • Dr. Burton evaluates your suitability before treatment (some staining doesn't respond to bleaching)
  • Sensitivity management — we address any pre-existing sensitivity and provide fluoride treatment
  • Predictable, dramatic results within a defined timeframe
  • On-going refills available — maintaining your result for years

Will My Teeth Be Sensitive?

Temporary tooth sensitivity during whitening is common and normal — it indicates the whitening process is working. We recommend using a sensitivity-reducing toothpaste (Sensodyne) for 2 weeks before whitening and applying fluoride gel after each treatment session. Sensitivity typically resolves completely within 24–48 hours of completing treatment. If you have significant pre-existing sensitivity, we'll customize your protocol for comfort.

What Whitening Cannot Fix

Professional whitening works beautifully on extrinsic staining (coffee, tea, wine, tobacco) and natural yellowing from aging. However, it cannot change the color of existing dental restorations (crowns, veneers, composite fillings), and intrinsic staining — darkening caused by medications (tetracycline), fluorosis, or trauma — responds incompletely or not at all to bleaching. In those cases, veneers or bonding may achieve your desired result more effectively.
