Dental Checkups & Teeth Cleanings

Your foundation for lifelong oral health — prevention is always easier than treatment.

Twice-yearly professional cleanings and comprehensive exams are the cornerstone of good oral health. At Magnolia Family Dentistry, your checkup is never rushed — Dr. Burton personally reviews every exam and takes time to explain what she finds, so you leave with a complete picture of your oral health.

What Happens at Your Cleaning Appointment

  • Medical history and medication review
  • Digital X-rays (as indicated — typically once per year)
  • Periodontal charting — pocket depths and gum health assessment
  • Oral cancer screening — soft tissue check of lips, tongue, cheeks, and throat
  • Scaling and polishing — removal of plaque, tartar, and surface stains
  • Fluoride treatment (recommended for adults and children)
  • Comprehensive exam by Dr. Burton with findings and recommendations

Why Every Six Months?

Plaque — the sticky bacterial film that causes cavities and gum disease — hardens into tartar (calculus) within 24 hours. Once it mineralizes, only professional instruments can remove it. Seeing us every six months keeps tartar from accumulating to levels that damage gum tissue and supporting bone. It also gives Dr. Burton the opportunity to catch small issues before they become expensive ones.

Digital X-Rays: Safe, Fast, and Informative

Our digital X-ray system emits up to 90% less radiation than traditional film X-rays and produces instant, high-resolution images that Dr. Burton can zoom, enhance, and walk you through chairside. Bitewings (cavity-checking X-rays) are typically taken once per year. Full-mouth series and panoramic X-rays are taken as clinically indicated.

Oral Cancer Screening

Oral cancer affects over 54,000 Americans per year — and when caught early, survival rates exceed 80%. At every exam, Dr. Burton conducts a thorough soft-tissue screening of your lips, cheeks, tongue, floor of the mouth, palate, and throat. Early detection is the single most important factor in successful treatment.
