Spring is a wonderful time — longer days, farmers markets, and fresh seasonal foods. But a few springtime staples can do real damage to your teeth if you're not careful.
1. Citrus Fruits (in excess)
Strawberries, oranges, and grapefruit are packed with vitamins, but their high acid content temporarily softens enamel. If you brush immediately after eating citrus, you risk scrubbing away softened enamel. Instead, rinse with water and wait 30 minutes before brushing.
2. Sticky Dried Fruits
Dried mango, apricots, and raisins might seem like healthy snacks, but their concentrated sugars cling to the surfaces and crevices of teeth for far longer than fresh fruit. That prolonged sugar exposure fuels bacteria that produce cavity-causing acid.
3. Sports Drinks
As the weather warms up and outdoor activities pick back up, sports drinks become a go-to. Unfortunately, most are highly acidic and loaded with sugar — a double threat for enamel. Water is always the best hydration choice. If you do drink sports drinks, use a straw and rinse with water afterward.
Protect Your Smile This Spring
You don't have to swear off these foods entirely. Moderation, rinsing with water, and keeping up with your twice-yearly cleanings at Magnolia Family Dentistry go a long way toward keeping your smile bright season after season.
