If you've recently started a new job, changed employers, or purchased a standalone dental plan, you may encounter something that surprises many patients: a waiting period before certain benefits kick in.
What Is a Dental Insurance Waiting Period?
A waiting period is a set amount of time after your policy begins during which coverage for specific services is not yet available. Insurance companies use waiting periods to discourage people from purchasing insurance specifically to cover an expensive procedure and then canceling.
Common Waiting Period Structures
- Preventive care (cleanings, exams, X-rays): usually covered immediately
- Basic restorative (fillings, simple extractions): typically a 3–6 month wait
- Major restorative (crowns, root canals, bridges): often a 6–12 month wait
- Orthodontics (braces, Invisalign): commonly a 12-month wait
Exceptions to Be Aware Of
Some plans waive waiting periods if you had continuous coverage under a prior plan — this is called a "creditable coverage" provision. Always provide documentation of your previous insurance when enrolling.
What This Means for You
If you need a crown or other major work now, you may face an out-of-pocket cost even with insurance. This is exactly why we offer multiple financing options — including our own in-house Membership Plan — so that waiting periods never keep you from the care you need.
